Can you end your temporary employment contract?

Normally, no. In general, you must work until the end of the contract, unless you are still in the trial period. For example, if you have a contract from Monday to Friday, you must stay and work until Friday. You have committed to working for a specific period, and the temporary employment agency has committed to paying you for that entire period.

However, there are exceptions. You can end your temporary contract early if both the agency and you agree. But be careful, if you simply stop working without notifying them, it is illegal and causes some issues:

  • You will not be paid for the days you didn't work when you should have.
  • You are breaking the contract yourself, which means you are resigning. Unfortunately, this means you will not be able to claim unemployment benefits.

If you really want to stop before the end of your contract, here's what you can do:

  • Talk to the temporary employment agency and explain that you want to end the contract earlier than planned. Ask if they agree.
  • If both parties agree, you can terminate the contract in advance.

Trial Period

If it is your first contract with a company through a temporary employment agency, you start with a trial period. This means that either you or the agency can terminate the contract without notice during a short period, usually just a few days. You will still be paid for these days.

But be careful, even during the trial period, you must always inform the temporary employment agency if you want to stop. It is never appropriate to simply stop working without notifying them.
