Why is there such a big difference between my gross and my net pay?

You've worked, so you receive your salary. And then you notice on your pay slip that there are several items on there that have been eating at your salary. Darn it! You'll see that a considerable portion of your salary goes to social security and taxes. Those are things that every working person in Belgium has to pay. What's the deal with that?
